Huck Finn Book Review   In the novel The Adventures of Huck Finn by Mark Twain, Huck Finn who is a young boy encounters many different situations that represent flaws in society. For example, when Huck Finn was experiencing guilty feelings for freeing Jim who was a slave, Twain reveals the attitudes that people during that time had regarding slavery and African Americans. Huck did the right thing, yet he feels bad for what he did because society tells him that it is wrong. Additionally, when Huck met the duke and the king who tricked people to get money, Twain reveals the gullibility of the society when the audience believed in their act. Twain also comments on the gullibility of specifically the adults which is demonstrated when Huck is able to quickly realize that the “king” and the “duke” were not actually kings or dukes and that they were lying while the adults in the story, such as Jim and the churchgoers during their performance actually believed in their hoax. In the play, The Crucible by Arthur Miller, the character Abigail starts out as the main focus of the story. Abigail is fixated on wanting to get rid of John Proctor’s wife so that she could instead be with John Proctor herself. So far, Abigail is my least favorite character because of her actions. Abigail is very manipulative and tries to get away with anything that she wants. She tries to cover up what she did at the forest by throwing Tituba under the bus. Not only did she betray someone that only ever helped her, but Abigail was also able to set up Elizabeth Proctor and get her arrested. The way she did this was by stabbing herself which proves just how much she really wished to be with John Proctor. Even I have to admit that’s dedication. In the end, Abigail didn’t even end up getting to be with John Proctor, and instead caused lots of trouble for the other citizens of Salem . After watching several videos that use satire in order to support their purpose, I believe satire can work as a very effective way to engage audiences. In the video that depicts pageant queens from different states, the purpose was to illustrate a very common stereotype among them that defines pageant queens as less intelligent, and ignorant to the more important issues in the world. The satire in the video makes it obvious that the video is using humor in order to achieve a greater purpose. In addition, in the article “I Want a Wife” by Judy Brady, the author uses reversal when she writes in the point of view of a man in order to emphasize her point on the endless expectations that men have on women within a marriage. The satire Brady uses within the article makes it more approachable by men and helps to stray away from directly calling out men by using a different method to depict the unfair treatment that women receive by men. The Great Gatsby represents a time period of when people valued money and having material goods. Having more things and striving for money was one of the biggest motives for people during the Roaring Twenties which is the primary setting of Fitzgerald’s novel. I really enjoyed reading The Great Gatsby because of the different/darker side of the American Dream that Fitzgerald portrayed through the characters. For example, Daisy, who had money and wealth which was considered the American Dream, was still unhappy with her life because she chose a path that provided her with stability instead of love. Her choice represents greed that the people in the novel were always comprised of. The characters were never satisfied with what they had, and instead always wanted more which illustrates the materialistic idea of the American Dream. I believe that although some may believe the American Dream is increasingly being associated with materialism, it still remains similar to what it meant to people in the past. The American Dream for people within America in the past was to have the “perfect family” that consisted of a white-picket fence and a family with two model children. This idea is only just a representation of what the American Dream meant to people in terms of living comfortably. It signified having a family that could live without having to worry about having any financial burdens, as well as living in a place that provides equality. However, when considering the factor of money in the American Dream, being wealthy and having more things should not be what one strives to achieve. Liberty is something that the people of America value greatly and have fought for over many centuries. It is an idea that everyone from across the world desires but may not always be able to fully achieve due to inequalities that exist in their own countries. To compare, we can look into the liberties women have in Saudi Arabia and the liberties women have in the United States. Saudi Arabia is a country that is known for its more conservative values which can be viewed as the cause for the oppression of women in the country from gaining equal rights. Women in Saudi Arabia have fewer liberties than women in America because of their government’s opposition of them being able to do certain things, such open their own bank account or freely travel without consent from a male guardian.
