Satire!?!

After watching several videos that use satire in order to support their purpose, I believe satire can work as a very effective way to engage audiences. In the video that depicts pageant queens from different states, the purpose was to illustrate a very common stereotype among them that defines pageant queens as less intelligent, and ignorant to the more important issues in the world. The satire in the video makes it obvious that the video is using humor in order to achieve a greater purpose. In addition, in the article “I Want a Wife” by Judy Brady, the author uses reversal when she writes in the point of view of a man in order to emphasize her point on the endless expectations that men have on women within a marriage. The satire Brady uses within the article makes it more approachable by men and helps to stray away from directly calling out men by using a different method to depict the unfair treatment that women receive by men.
Although satire can be very effective in achieving its purpose to the audience in a more light-hearted but still impactful way, it can also be dangerous depending on how it is used. In the article, Teaching the Irony of Satire (Ironically)” the implications of satire are discussed from Jon Stewart in an interview conducted by The Rolling Stones. Stewart discusses the idea that if satire is very planned out and structured, it can seem too real which can then offend people who view the material with seriousness and fail to follow the humor that is implied through the satire.
Overall, I believe that satire is mostly effective despite the implications that may come with using it. By adding humor to serious issues, satire allows audiences to be less afraid to discuss the issues and can make them even more aware of them and their importance.

  1. I agree with what you wrote because the humor in satire does truly engage the audience, like you mentioned in the very beginning. Also, it's a good way to state facts that may be controversial to others reading it.

  3. This was a greta summary of satire and the effects on readers. I liked your organization with two paragraphs explaining both the positive and negative implications of satire.
