The Crucible Begins!

In the play, The Crucible by Arthur Miller, the character Abigail starts out as the main focus of the story. Abigail is fixated on wanting to get rid of John Proctor’s wife so that she could instead be with John Proctor herself. So far, Abigail is my least favorite character because of her actions. Abigail is very manipulative and tries to get away with anything that she wants. She tries to cover up what she did at the forest by throwing Tituba under the bus. Not only did she betray someone that only ever helped her, but Abigail was also able to set up Elizabeth Proctor and get her arrested. The way she did this was by stabbing herself which proves just how much she really wished to be with John Proctor. Even I have to admit that’s dedication. In the end, Abigail didn’t even end up getting to be with John Proctor, and instead caused lots of trouble for the other citizens of Salem . Her actions were extremely destructive toward others but Abigail never seemed to understand or even consider how she might hurt others by her lies.
So far, I really like the play and am still so shocked that it is of a true story. Somehow all the events that occurred had actually taken place which surprises me greatly because of how ridiculous some of the events seem and how irrational most of the characters seem to be. Regardless of the annoying/infuriating characters, the story still remains very intriguing and tends to leave me always wanting to find out what happens next.

  1. I totally agree with everything you just said! Abigail is also my least favorite character and I think that her lying, and manipulating to get what she wants is irresponsible. However, the book over all is truly intriguing and interesting and I cant wait to see how this all plays out.

  2. I feel the same way about Abigail, it's really frustrating to see her taking being executed so lightly. I can't tell if she realizes the significance of what she's done. In some ways, Abigail reminds me of Daisy from The Great Gasby. Both characters are reckless and act out of only self interest without thinking about the affect on others and consequences.

  3. I agree, Abigail is just causing a lot of unnecessary problems within the town like framing Elizabeth of stabbing Abigail with a needle is completely unnecessary. She is acting out about something so small but is causing a large scene about not getting what she wants.
