The American Dream
I believe that although some may believe the American Dream is increasingly being associated with materialism, it still remains similar to what it meant to people in the past. The American Dream for people within America in the past was to have the “perfect family” that consisted of a white-picket fence and a family with two model children. This idea is only just a representation of what the American Dream meant to people in terms of living comfortably. It signified having a family that could live without having to worry about having any financial burdens, as well as living in a place that provides equality. However, when considering the factor of money in the American Dream, being wealthy and having more things should not be what one strives to achieve. I believe that the American Dream still remains similar to the idea of living comfortably and finding equality which is represented by the immigrants that move to America just for that. This applies to my own family when my parents and oldest brother moved to America before my other brother and I were born. My dad came to America with the hopes to find a better job and achieve more success in America than he did in India with his previous job. Many immigrants, similar to my own family, come to America in order to find a better job, or because they wish to leave an area that may not be as accepting of who they are or what they believe in. America is a country that has in the past and continues today to allow for more freedom to its citizens than most other countries which is why the American Dream has become a desire for so many.
I agree that the freedom to move up the social hierarchy is what makes the American Dream appealing to many, and that may be the reason the American Dream was associated with materialism. However, like you said, I feel that the idea of living comfortably without having to worry about feeding and clothing your family is what most people's American Dream is. Each person's dreams and ambitions vary based on personal experiece so for some it may be getting into a certain college or for some buying a certain car.
ReplyDeleteI can relate to the same story of your family. My parents moved to America seeking a better opportunity for their growing family so that we could live our lives the best they could be. I also agree with how the definition of the dream has changed over time;starting from having a simple stable house with a family and good jobs to more materialistic objects.
ReplyDeleteI can also agree with your article as it realates to my family as well. My parents, my father especially idolize and praise America for its freedom and liberty. They are proud to have created a Future in a safe environment free from war, something they never had growing up.
