Masculinity and Femininity

Image
Gender stereotypes have existed in the past and continue to exist today as well. Despite the change that has been occurring to rid of these dominant stereotypes, they still persist in today's society. In my English class, we watched a video that discussed the issue of masculinity and boys/men trying to fit a certain image that being named "masculine" represents to the rest of society. Being masculine is seen as being tough and not allowing true emotions to show, which are generally presumed to be considered as "feminine" qualities. Crying in front of others or being interested in activities or certain things that are not considered "manly" has caused other boys to bully those who don't fit this specific image, which was demonstrated by several young children from the video. The bullying is a demonstration of the destruction that the words "feminine" and "masculine" and the meanings established by

Standardized Testing

Image
Schools today seem to put so much importance on one test known as the SAT that determines our future. This test through the eyes of students is terrifying and causes a lot of stress and anxiety. With this test coming up and more in class discussions over the facets of this test, I feel like this test is overall deemed by the student body as an insufficient way of judging students. A reason for this is because some students may not be good test takers, whereas outside of the testing environment, they might actually be very smart and intelligent in other things or subjects. The test does not represent what a student is capable of and because of it, should not be held to such importance by administrators. Moreover, a student may have studied for a long time and put a lot more effort in trying to get a certain score, while another student who does not try as hard may receive the same score or even a higher score. In cases like this, I feel that the student that has put more time an

What If Schools...

Image
What if schools started later? This would only provide more good than harm to the students who would now be able to get more sleep. Sleep is very important in allowing students to feel more awake and energized throughout the day. Sleep provides aid to a student both mentally and physically. Getting more sleep helps to relieve stress which is very important for students who tend to get lots of homework which keeps them up late at night. Additionally, the first hour of class in the day can be sometimes very hard to get through because of the early start of school. By starting schools later, students can get more sleep and be more awake during school. What if schools didn't make students take standardized tests? Standardized tests are held with great importance at schools and for colleges. These tests only represent a small part of a student's ability and impact students greatly if they don't do well on them. A test does not allow a student to demonstrate qualities abo

How to Tame a Wild Tongue Response

Anzaldua's purpose is to demonstrate the different dialects of speaking Spanish and how speaking the language differently can affect how one is perceived by others. The author provides anecdotes about her life that illustrate how others around her would judge her for the way she would speak Spanish.  When the author would write in Spanish, I found it easy to understand because it flowed nicely whenever she transitioned and she usually would follow up with a translation of what she said. I am familiar with Spanish so the incorporation of the Spanish in the passages did not affect my understanding and made it easier to grasp her reasoning for why she provided examples of Spanish phrases throughout which was intended in order to give the reader background on how Spanish is spoken in different dialects their effects.  I believe that when the author incorporates anecdotes, it helps the reader feel more included because it gives them  personal examples that can help them visualize an

The Deeper Meanings Behind Huck Finn

Image
Huck Finn Book Review   In the novel The Adventures of Huck Finn by Mark Twain, Huck Finn who is a young boy encounters many different situations that represent flaws in society. For example, when Huck Finn was experiencing guilty feelings for freeing Jim who was a slave, Twain reveals the attitudes that people during that time had regarding slavery and African Americans. Huck did the right thing, yet he feels bad for what he did because society tells him that it is wrong. Additionally, when Huck met the duke and the king who tricked people to get money, Twain reveals the gullibility of the society when the audience believed in their act. Twain also comments on the gullibility of specifically the adults which is demonstrated when Huck is able to quickly realize that the “king” and the “duke” were not actually kings or dukes and that they were lying while the adults in the story, such as Jim and the churchgoers during their performance actually believed in their hoax. In addit

The Crucible Begins!

In the play, The Crucible by Arthur Miller, the character Abigail starts out as the main focus of the story. Abigail is fixated on wanting to get rid of John Proctor’s wife so that she could instead be with John Proctor herself. So far, Abigail is my least favorite character because of her actions. Abigail is very manipulative and tries to get away with anything that she wants. She tries to cover up what she did at the forest by throwing Tituba under the bus. Not only did she betray someone that only ever helped her, but Abigail was also able to set up Elizabeth Proctor and get her arrested. The way she did this was by stabbing herself which proves just how much she really wished to be with John Proctor. Even I have to admit that’s dedication. In the end, Abigail didn’t even end up getting to be with John Proctor, and instead caused lots of trouble for the other citizens of Salem . Her actions were extremely destructive toward others but Abigail never seemed to understand

Satire!?!

After watching several videos that use satire in order to support their purpose, I believe satire can work as a very effective way to engage audiences. In the video that depicts pageant queens from different states, the purpose was to illustrate a very common stereotype among them that defines pageant queens as less intelligent, and ignorant to the more important issues in the world. The satire in the video makes it obvious that the video is using humor in order to achieve a greater purpose. In addition, in the article “I Want a Wife” by Judy Brady, the author uses reversal when she writes in the point of view of a man in order to emphasize her point on the endless expectations that men have on women within a marriage. The satire Brady uses within the article makes it more approachable by men and helps to stray away from directly calling out men by using a different method to depict the unfair treatment that women receive by men. Although satire can be very effective in achieving it
