Standardized Testing
Schools today seem to put so much importance on one test known as the SAT that determines our future. This test through the eyes of students is terrifying and causes a lot of stress and anxiety. With this test coming up and more in class discussions over the facets of this test, I feel like this test is overall deemed by the student body as an insufficient way of judging students. A reason for this is because some students may not be good test takers, whereas outside of the testing environment, they might actually be very smart and intelligent in other things or subjects. The test does not represent what a student is capable of and because of it, should not be held to such importance by administrators. Moreover, a student may have studied for a long time and put a lot more effort in trying to get a certain score, while another student who does not try as hard may receive the same score or even a higher score. In cases like this, I feel that the student that has put more time and effort should be acknowledged more because they show more passion and drive which are qualities that are more important moving forward into college and elsewhere. In addition, money can also serve as a disadvantage for the test. Students that are not at a disadvantage regarding money are able to take classes that allow them to thoroughly study and prepare for the test and get afford tutors to further help them improve. The cost of books can also be difficult for some who cannot afford them. This disadvantage is a significant reason, as well as the mental health of students and the lack of representation regarding the SAT toward students which is why it should not be held with as much importance as it is today.
I understand and agree with your point of view. I understand the reason behind standardized testing but I think that they are not always a fair representation of a student's true ability.
ReplyDeleteI agree that a major factor behind school stress and anxiety is standardized tests, especially the SAT. Most students would agree that their score is not a accurate representation of what they are capable of.
